Andrews’ season comes to a close

Thomasville – The Andrews football team’s 2023 season came to an end Friday night with a 49-6 loss to the Bulldogs in the first round of the class 1A N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.

Thomasville (8-3), the No. 11 seed in the West Region, moves on to face No. 6 Albemarle (6-5), which shut out No. 27 South
Davidson 49-0. The Bulldogs scored 14 points in
the first quarter and 21 more in the second to put the game on ice, adding a touchdown in the third and fourth quarters.

No. 22 seed Andrews, which only crossed the goal line once, in the second quarter – ends the season 4-7. That’s not what the Wildcats wanted after their highly successful 2022 season – when they beat Murphy twice, won the Smoky Mountain Conference championship and advanced to the fourth round of the state playoffs before finishing at 13-1 – but they continued to play hard through both adversity and injuries.

“I am confident in the character, coach-ability and commitment of our kids,” head coach James Phillips said. Andrews has 16 juniors expected to return.
