Valdese – All four local schools had athletes qualify for this year’s N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A Track & Field State Championship on Friday at N.C. A&T in Greensboro by finishing in the top four of their events during last week’s 1A West Regional at Draughn High School.
A total of 10 student-athletes qualified in individual events, while five will be going for relays. Andrews has six, with Kylie Donaldson and Isaac Weaver both qualifying for their second state championship.
Donaldson will compete in the long jump (15 feet, 9.25 inches) for the second straight year, while Weaver will compete in the shot put (47’6.75) after finishing fourth in the long jump last year. Other qualifiers for the Wildcats were Kegan Ellis in the boys long jump (20’3.25), Samuel Preston in the boys triple jump (40’4.75), O’Malley Salinas in the boys 3,200-meter run (10 minutes, 11.66 seconds) and Logan Shuler in the boys high jump (6’0).
Murphy has seven state qualifiers. Aiden Smith will compete in the girls discus (101’9), while Jordan Oliver will compete in the girls discus (16’4), girls wheelchair shot put (7’7) and girls 100-meter wheelchair dash (59.03). Oliver, who won the 100-meter wheelchair dash last year, has finished second in both the discus and shot put event the last two years.
