Greensboro – Andrews’ Logan Shuler won the state 1A championship as his domination in high jump continued.
He jumped 6 feet, 6 inches, tying his personal best, to win the event and a state championship for the Wildcats. In addition, Jordan Oliver won the state championship for Murphy in the wheelchair 100-meter dash, wheelchair discus and wheelchair shot put as she becomes a 12-time state champion.
On Monday, six athletes from Cherokee County high schools traveled to N.C. A&T University for the 1A outdoor track and field state championship.
Fern Crayton from Tri-County Early College competed in the 3,200m run and finished in fourth place with a time of 12:10.63, a season best for her and the team in the event. She beat her season best by 8.49 seconds.
Andrews’ Samuel Preston competed in the long jump and got fifth place with a leap of 20 feet, 4.50 inches. He finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 8.50 inches.
Murphy’s Corrine Cotton competed in the 400m dash and finished in third place with a time of 59.427 seconds, securing third place by 0.002 seconds over Renn Herdklotz of Avery County.
Camden Breazeale competed in the 110-meter hurdles and got 12th in the preliminary race with the top eight going to the finals. Despite not making the finals, he did set a personal record of 15.90 seconds.
Breazeale also competed in the 300m hurdles and got eighth place with a time of 41.20 seconds, securing another personal record. He beat he previous best by 0.26 seconds.
In overall points for 1A boys, Andrews tied for 13th with 18 points, Murphy tied for 41st with one point. For 1A girls, Murphy finished tied for 23rd with nine points and Tri-County finished tied for 32nd with five points.
