    Wayne Fraser Hoefsmit, 78, of Brasstown, passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020.
    Raised in New England, he moved to North Carolina in 2006.
    He was a welder by trade and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam.
    Wayne was a quiet man with a tough exterior and a sweet heart. He loved his family and had a passion for gardening, canning and preserving along with his wife. Some will remember his pickles, which he shared around town.
    Wayne attended Calvary Chapel Murphy.
    He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Linda Mary Hoefsmit; sister, Irene Hoefsmit; three children, Charles F. Brown of Deerfield Beach, Fla., Suzan M. Aliberti of Greenfield, Mass., and Leanne Gomez of Hampton Beach, N.H.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Cindy Donahue, Suzan and Joseph Liguori, Elizabeth and Brent Key, John and Kathleen Falkenstrom, and David and Suzanne Falkenstrom; grandchildren, Kevin Goller, Nadia Brown, Rebecca Hoefsmit, Tony, Joey and Angela Aliberti; and three great-grandchildren, Eric and Isabella Mejias, and Anthony Minero.
    A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at the Warne Community Center. All are welcome.
    Cochran Funeral Home of Murphy is in charge of arrangements.
