    Vona Gentry Thurman, 92, of Murphy, was called home to her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 13, 2022.
    She was a native of College Park, Ga., and later lived in Red Oak and Fairburn, Ga., prior to moving to Murphy in 1972.
    She was a loving homemaker to her husband and seven children.
    Vona was a member of Marble Springs Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years, sang in the choir, and enjoyed visiting with the shut-ins. She was a prayer warrior and active in fundraising for many missionaries and specifically the Lottie Moon and Annie Armstrong mission programs.
    Vona enjoyed traveling, gardening and was a wonderful cook. She was a gifted artist and created many beautiful paintings, which will be on display at the Celebration of Life.
    She was the daughter of the late Henry Frazier and Lalla Gentry Bailey, and wife of the late Arnell Mitchell Thurman, who died in 2005. She was also preceded in death by three sons, Bruce, Tommy and Steven Thurman; two grandsons, Keith and Steven Thurman; a sister, Tinha Anderson; and two brothers, Frazier and Victor Bailey.  
    Surviving are four children, Stewart Thurman of Murphy, Mitchell Thurman and Myron Thurman, both of Austell, Ga., and Annette Thurman of Carrollton, Va.; two daughters-in-law, Karen Thurman and Linda Vickory; a sister, Guineviere Fulton of Fayetteville. Vona beloved her 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; plus nieces, nephews and cousins.
    A Celebration of Life will begin at noon Saturday, April 23, in Marble Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. John Bailey and Vona’s grandson Zack Thurman officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Hot Springs, N.C., at the private family cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 23, at Marble Springs Baptist Church prior to the services.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Vona Gentry Thurman to the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for Missions in North America.
    Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, is in charge of arrangements.
