    Joseph Dennis Mickens, 67, of the Hiwassee Dam Community, passed away Friday, Dec. 13, 2019, at his residence.
    He worked many years at Tennessee Chemical Company. He enjoyed attending auctions and spending time in Florida. He was known for selling thousands of peanut butter eggs each year at the annual fund raiser for The Church of God on Highway 294. He was also an avid NASCAR fan and loved spoiling his grandkids.
    He was born Feb. 17, 1952, in Ducktown, Tenn., and was the son of Jewel Mickens Murphy and the late Goldman Mickens of Hiwassee Dam.
    Surviving, in addition to his mother, are two sons, Jeremy Mickens and girlfriend Kaitlyn, and Justin Mickens, all of Murphy; two sisters, Joan Higdon and husband Gary, and Ava Anderson and husband Tom, all of Hiwassee Dam; a brother, Dee Mickens Jr. and wife Sheila of Copperhill, Tenn.; and four grandchildren, Brandon, Kinsley, Trinity and Tanner Mickens.
    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at The Church of God on Highway 294 with the Rev. Earl Hughes officiating. The interment was in Liberty Cemetery. Pallbearers were Blake Rodriguez, Chase and Keaton Mickens, Jacob and Tyler Wallace and Hunter Williamson. Honorary pallbearers were Gary Higdon, Tom Anderson, Junior Mickens, Tommy Stiles, Kenneth Davis, Dennis Beatty, Dick Higdon and Joe Parsons.
    The family received friends from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, at Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, where the body remained until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Joseph Dennis Mickens to the Parkinson’s Association of the Carolinas, 601 E. Fifth St., Suite 140, Charlotte, NC  28202.
    Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, was in charge of all arrangements.
