    John Campbell Scroggs, 88, of Clyde, passed away Friday, April 23, 2021, at Autumn Care of Waynesville.
    He was born Jan. 11, 1933, in Brasstown, Cherokee County, to the late Fred O. and Mary Jane (Mae) Scroggs. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Mulkey Scroggs; son, Jody Fred; sisters, Lucille Brock, Blanche Smith, Faye Barnett and Barbara Mauney; and brothers, Bob, Boyd, Mercer and Dale Scroggs.
    He is survived by son, Justin Scroggs (Jane) of Cullowhee; daughter, Jennie Scroggs Ienzer (Didier) of St. Laurent du Var, France; daughter, Jill Scroggs Silverboard (Reid) of Largo, Fla.; and his beloved granddaughters, Emma, Laura and Rachel; sister, Wanda Hampton of Waynesville; sister-in-law, Susie Scroggs of East Flat Rock; and his much-loved nieces and nephews.
    John graduated from Hayesville High School in the class of 1951, and served two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
    John worked for three years in the Atlanta area and married the love of his life, Geraldine (Jerri) Mulkey on Thanksgiving Day 1955.
    John was hired as a mechanical apprentice at the Champion paper mill in 1958. While working in the mill, he held various roles with the Local 507 Union and then 15 years as a regional representative for the United Paperworkers Union.
    After retiring in 1995, John enjoyed gardening, traveling and volunteering. His volunteer work included being a tutor with the Haywood Literacy Council, a mediator with Mountain Mediation Services, a volunteer with the Clyde Little League program, a Big Brother with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, and in various positions with the Democratic Party in North Carolina.
    A socially distanced graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Clyde. A light reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
