    James Thomas Russell, 76, of Murphy, passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2022.
    He was born June 27, 1945, in Quantico, Va., to the late Willam Margaret Browell Russell.
    James was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He retired after 26 years of service.
    James enjoyed traveling; he “burnt the road up.” He also enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. James loved telling stories.
    He attended Friendship Baptist Church.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bob and Bill Russell.
    He is survived by children, Robert Russell of Asheville, Andy Russell and wife Christy of Murphy, and Leighsa Lattimore and husband Brian of Knoxville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, Robert Russell of Santa Monica, Calif., Amber Russell of Charlotte, Katie Rheu of Grand Haven, Mich., Maquela Ellis and Brian Lattimore II, both of Knoxville, Tenn., Jesse, Ethan and Sadie Russell, all of Murphy, NC; five great-grandchildren; and many special nieces and nephews.
    A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at Friendship Baptist Church on N.C. 294, with the Rev. Jim Payne officiating. Reception and fellowship will follow at 3 p.m. in the fellowship hall.
