Hilda Arenah (Green) Gillus, 94, of Emporia, Va., passed away peacefully in the early morning hour on Monday, Dec. 6, 2021, at Valley View Care and Rehabilitation Center in Andrews.
Hilda was born June 6, 1927, in Newport News, Va., to Leonard Alphonso Green and Blanche (Smith) Green.
She was a graduate of Huntington High School in Newport News and the former Saint Paul College in Lawrenceville, Va.
She worked in scholastic research grants at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and served as a volunteer in the gift shop at the regional hospital in Emporia, Va.
In addition to her parents, Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Gillus of Emporia, Va.; a son, Robert Gillus of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Rubye (Green) Palmer; five brothers, Charlie Green, Leon Green, David Green, Embra Green and Wilbert Greene; and a niece, Sandra (Palmer) Murdock.
Hilda is survived by three sons, Leon Gillus of Emporia, Va.; Larry Gillus of Andrews; and Michael Gillus of Vallejo, Calif.; two daughters-in-law, Geneva (Morton) Gillus of Andrews and Carla (Anderson) Gillus of Vallejo; and two nephews, Oscar Palmer of Chase City, Va., and Toney Greene of Washington. She is also survived by many other relatives including sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as many friends.
Burial services will be held in the afternoon Saturday, Dec. 18, at Rising Star Baptist Church Cemetery in Brunswick County, Va.
Ivie Funeral Home of Murphy, will be responsible for the preparation of the deceased for burial, and Knox High Mortuary of Emporia, Va., will be responsible for burial arrangements.
