Hazel Cox
Hazel Eunice McDuffie Cox, 87, of Andrews, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 29, 2022.
She was a native of Carver’s Creek Community, N.C., but had lived in Baltimore, Md., prior to moving to Orlando, Fla., in the late 1950s.
She attended nursing school and worked as a surgical technician, a job she loved, for more than 30 years. She then retired and moved to Andrews, in 1996.
She was a member of the Baptist church.
Hazel volunteered at District Memorial Hospital and also the Mission thrift store in Andrews.
She took pride in her yard, growing flowers and gardening. She loved music, singing, animals, cooking, reading and spending time with friends and family.
She was the daughter of the late Jasper Cadell and Annie Mae Hammonds McDuffie. She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Patti Sue Cox Ali and Kathy Lynn Cox Smith; six sisters, Mildred Davis, Alma Hall, Alta Bell Moody, Velna Huffstetler, Bonnie Register and Flossie McDuffie; and three brothers, Wendell, Novalee “Doc” and J.C. McDuffie.
Surviving are her husband of nearly 69 years, Thomas Everette Cox; one daughter, Jenni Houser and husband Rick of Parker, Colo.; one granddaughter, Tasha Renee Ali and Dennis Wenrich of Longwood, Fla.; one son-in-law, Tosh Ali of Longwood, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Ava Lyanna and Everett Michael Wenrich; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Dr. Calvin Bobo officiating. Pallbearers will be John Kilpatrick, Pat Kelley, Jesse Bullard, Richard Bullard, Rudy McDuffie and Kenneth Register.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, prior to the services.
