Body

It is with laden hearts we announce the passing of our loving sister and mother, Georgia “Joy” Shagena, Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2020.
Joy was born Dec. 6, 1952, in Harvey, Ill., but for the last nine years she’s called Murphy her home.
She was preceded in death by both parents, J.D. and Ruth Garitson, but is survived by daughters, Tammy Lutes and Janie Hill of Kentucky and Bradenton, Fla; and three loving grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her four sisters, Gail Lapp, spouse (Eli), Judy Colson, (Ray) of Bradenton, Fla., and Nancy Clark (James), Robin Kline (Tom) of Murphy.
Joy enjoyed attending services and was a member at Messiah Episcopal Church here in Murphy regularly. She also worked diligently in animal rescue.
She had a tenacious heart, and enjoyed volunteering with a passion. It is due to such passion she found herself working with several local animal outreach programs, including the local Thrift Store, where proceeds are disbursed and used to provide care for displaced and, sadly, unwanted animals.
All community, family and friends attended a celebration of life services for Joy at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Messiah Episcopal Church, 76 Peachtree St. in Murphy.
In lieu of flowers, it was her wish that all proceeds be mailed to Valley River Human Society, 7450 U.S. 19, Marble, NC 28905 in honor of Joy Shagena.
She was a devoted mother and sister, and joy to all who knew and loved her. Go rest high on that mountain, love until we meet again. You take a piece of our hearts with you.

Townson-Rose Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.
