    Gene Wilburn Sneed, 78, of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021, in a Murphy hospital.
    Gene was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County.
    He was a veteran of the United States Navy, where he served during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
    He was owner and operator of Gene Sneed Construction for nearly 50 years.
    He was a member of Ivy Log Baptist Church.
    Gene enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, gardening and watching football.
    He was the son of the late Quenton Wilburn and Reathel Bryson Sneed.
    Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Mary Ann Lance Sneed; a daughter, Susan Sneed Alderman of Asheville; a son, Douglas Sneed of Murphy; two sisters, Joyce Welch and husband David of Charleston, S.C., and Joann Keever and husband Lawrence of Easley, S.C.; and three grandsons, Ethan, Evan and Bryson Sneed. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
    A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will take place in Ivy Log Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Ivy Log Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 36 Jamie Gray Lane, Blairsville, GA 30512.
    Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, is in charge of all arrangements.
