    Gene Griggs, 87, of Marble, passed away Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020, in a Robbinsville care facility.
    He was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County.
    Gene was employed with Baker Furniture, retiring in 1997 after 31 years.
    Gene coached little league baseball in Cherokee County for many years.
    He was a member of Marble Springs Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir and served as a deacon.
    Gene enjoyed gardening and woodworking.       
    He was the son of the late Ulysses Grant and Emma Jane Crisp Griggs, and husband of the late Lois Ann Raxter Griggs, who died Feb. 22, 2010. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Adam Colt Griggs; two sisters, Frances Carroll and Pearl Griggs; and three brothers, Marcell, Vincent and Porter Griggs.
    Surviving are a son, Donny Griggs and wife April of Andrews; two sisters, Mae Coffey and Linda Parsons, both of Gastonia; three brothers, Charles Griggs of High Point, Junior Griggs of Gastonia, and Robert Griggs of Murphy; two granddaughters, Allie Griggs and fiance Jordon Mathis, and Erika Griggs, all of Andrews; and many nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at noon Saturday, Jan. 4, in Marble Springs Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bernie Dixon and John Bailey officiating. The interment was in Moss Cemetery. Pallbearers were Howard Coffey, Dick Brown, Mike Erwin, Mike Hunsucker, Danny Crooke and Jeff Rowland.
    The family received friends from 10-11:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at Marble Springs Baptist Church prior to the services.                
    Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, was in charge of all arrangements.
