    Gary Robert Jones, 70, of Hayesville, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022 at Erlanger Hospital after a month-long stay with cardiac problems.
    He was born May 24, 1951, to Jack and Ruth Hughes Jones of Andrews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Tabetha Jones Howard; and brothers, Carol, Dick, Ray and Howard Jones.
    He has one living brother, Donald and wife Linda Jones of Andrews.
    He worked many years as a heavy equipment mechanic, first with TVA, then years in Atlanta, Ga.
    He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Teresa Mathis Jones of the home; sons, Dustin Jones of Charlotte, and Brett and Rachel Jones of Peachtree; his very special grandchildren that he adored, Brooke Howard, Kayli Howard, Tyler Jones, Allison Jones, Brady Jones, Eva Jones and Kynlee Jones; and his very special buddy, Bandit; along with several nieces and nephews.
    Gary was very personable and would speak with everyone he met. He played golf twice a week with his fellow veterans as well as family and friends. He loved talking about his boat out on the lake whether it be fishing or riding around the lake. He was also passionate about Hayesville High School athletics, especially basketball and volleyball. He would always sit in the same area so he could yell at the refs if need be.
    Gary was a very proud Vietnam Veteran. He will be missed by all of his family and friends.
    A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Valleytown Cemetery.
    In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a local VFW Post of your choice.
