    Eugene “Gene” B. Clayton passed away peacefully at home Friday, Aug. 6, 2021, surrounded by his loving family.
    Gene was born June 28, 1929, in Murphy, and was the son of the late Floyd and Mary Clayton. He was also preceded in death by six sisters and one brother.
    Gene was a poultry farmer throughout his life. When he wasn’t working, he loved spending time with his family, being outside, deep-sea fishing, hunting and gardening.
    He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Little Brasstown Baptist Church.
    Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Clara B. Clayton of Murphy; one daughter, Debbie Chambers (Buc), and one son, Bryan Clayton (Karie), all of Murphy; four granddaughters, Shanna Chapman (Gina) of Austin, Texas, Jenna Laney (Eric) of Brasstown, Laynee Adams (Jerome) of Murphy and Lacie Knight (Ross) of Brasstown. In addition, he also had six great grandchildren: Kassidy, Clayton, Harper, Landon, Brixton and Blakelee. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, at Little Brasstown Baptist Church with the Rev. Aud Brown officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with Masonic Graveside Rites by Cherokee Lodge 146. Pallbearers were Jerome Adams, Keith Clayton, Jonathan Cochran, Kenny Hall, Josh Laney and Thad Laney. Honorary pallbearers were Larry Bracket, Ronnie Clayton, Greg Cranford, Dennis Curtis, Wayne Holland, Rick Stiles and Charles West.
    The family received friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, at Little Brasstown Baptist Church.
    Townson-Rose Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.
