    Edward A. “Ed” Gleason Jr., 89, of Murphy passed away Monday, July 26, 2021, at his residence.
    He was a native of Galveston, Texas, but had lived in Detroit, Mich., for most of his life before moving to Cherokee County in 1994.
    He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Air Force.  
    Ed retired after 27 years with the Detroit Police Department as a Detective Sergeant. He was a member and deacon of Murphy First Baptist Church.
    Ed was an artist and enjoyed oil painting and pen and ink drawings.
    He was the son of the late Edward A. and Bridget Gallagher Gleason.
    Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Florence Campbell Gleason; a daughter, Kathleen Gleason of Michigan; two step-daughters, Carol Sanderson of Murphy and Kathleen Kitzan of Big Lake, Alaska; one stepson, Thomas John Lindberg of Fraser, Mich.; one sister, Constance Gleason Furcolo of Cambridge, Mass.; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, July 30, in Murphy First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Tanner officiating. Pallbearers will be will be Tom Profant, Jerry Christensen, Dillan Lindberg, Dwight Otwell, Ron Lewis and Shawn Wilson. A private inurnment will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Murphy American Legion Post 96, Hayesville VFW Post 6812 and Hayesville American Legion Post 532.
    The family will receive friends from 11-11:45 a.m.Friday, July 30, at Murphy First Baptist Church, prior to the service.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 164, Murphy, NC 28906.
    Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, is in charge of all arrangements.
