On her 91st birthday, Doris McGill Sherwood passed away in Sarasota, Fla.
She was born Aug. 21, 1930, in Murphy to Charles and Hester McGill.
She received her nursing degree at Baroness Erlanger Hospital School of Nursing and worked for the Hamilton County Public Health Department.
On Jan. 18, 1952, she married Jonathan Hall Sherwood and took up residence in Pomona, N.Y., before moving to Venice, Fla.
She is survived by her children, Melanie Sherwood (spouse of Richard Low), Jessica S. George (spouse of Stephen George), Sarah Peickert (spouse of David Peickert); her grandchildren, Danielle Bonanni (spouse of Michael Bonanni), William George, Savanah Low, Samuel Peickert and R. Phoebe Peickert; and her great-grandchildren, Morgan Bonanni, Lucas Bonanni, Clara Bonanni; foster son, Jimmy Sibio; and foster grandchild, Hasti Ahmadi.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jonathan H. Sherwood in January 2021, and her brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Doris McGill.
Doris’ nature was to nurture and love others. Doris volunteered with the Red Cross, CERT, Rockland Baptist Church and many other organizations. Throughout her life, Doris proved to be savvy and thrifty creating value with the resources she had. Even in her 80s and 90s, it was difficult to keep up with her, running errands and managing her collections.
Doris loved clipping articles from magazines to send to friends and family. She loved hats, birds, rocks, gardening, antiques and travel. She shared these loves with her children and grandchildren.
Above all else, she shared her faith in the power of prayer and the transformative message of Jesus Christ. She will be missed for her faith, wisdom and creativity.
Ever thoughtful; Doris left her family and loved ones with these words:
“I am free from pain and evil, free from disappointment. Life’s puzzles I understand now. I’m welcomed into God’s home, I will be waiting for you.”
The family of Doris would like to thank the following people and families for their support during this time: Marty Lino, Karen and Bob Jordan, the staff and residents of VOTI, Susan Haley, Mary Ann Ociesa, and the doctors and nurses at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
There will be a Zoom memorial service at 10 a.m. EST Saturday, Nov. 27.  Information for obtaining the Zoom link is available on the obituary Tribute Wall at www.iviefuneralhome.com.
