Betty Berrong Gladson, 84, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2022, at her home in Murphy.
Betty Gladson was born on June 6, 1938, in Hayesville to Frank Berrong and Rosetta Berrong.
Betty graduated from high school and married Harold James Gladson before starting her lifelong career as a homemaker in the Mount Pleasant Community. Harold and Betty had two children – Sharon Elaine Stiles of Murphy and James David Gladson (deceased).
Betty was best known for her broad range of abilities. Someone once said, “She can fix anything.” She was an avid gardener and tended to her flowers, plants and land until her final days. She was skilled at all kinds of handicrafts from crocheting to sewing to painting and was a terrific cook. She loved jewelry, collectibles, puzzles, games, the outdoors, her family and friends, all babies and a lot in between.
Betty was a devoted Christian and member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Murphy, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She could quote almost any Bible verse you could think of from memory. She loved to learn and to teach, and her knack for both will be greatly missed.
Betty is survived by Sharon Stiles, daughter, Murphy; Candie and Jeff Shahlaie, granddaughter and grandson-in-law, and Adel Shahlaie, great-grandson, Atlanta, Ga.; Tiffany and Matt Barber, granddaughter and grandson-in-law, and Maddox Falconer, great-granddaughter, Emma Barber, great-granddaughter, and Griffin Barber, great-grandson, Woodstock, Ga.; Marilyn Bailey, sister, Hayesville; Teresa and Dwight McClure, sister and brother-in-law, Hayesville. Also surviving is Betty Gladson, sister-in-law, Blairsville, Ga., and Kay Berrong, sister-in-law, Winder, Ga. Additionally, Betty has a healthy line of nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews in the North Carolina and North Georgia area.
Betty was preceded in death by Harold Gladson, husband; James Gladson, son; Weldon Berrong, brother; Frank Berrong, father, and Rosetta Berrong, mother. Also gone on before are many of Betty’s in-laws from the Murphy, Blairsville and Atlanta areas.
The service for Betty was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at Cochran. Following this chapel service at Cochran, there will be a graveside memorial and burial at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Gideon’s International at https://gideons.org/donate.
