10 years ago – Sept. 11, 2013, Scout: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals filed a new petition to stop the “cruel” annual Possum Drop from taking place in Brasstown.

  • Brandon Jones and incumbent Adam Wachacha were elected to represent Cherokee County and Snowbird on the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Tribal Council, with incumbent Diamond Brown Jr. losing.
  • The Scavenger Hunt was a big hit during the monthly First Friday Murphy Art Walk.

Sept. 12, 2013, Journal: Scott Deaton of Collett Creek Road in Andrews died two days after he was injured when his house was destroyed by fire.

  • Eric Reichman’s amazing journey from Poland to Andrews was captured in a two-part series. Part one focused on how World War II tore apart his family.

25 years ago – Sept. 9, 1998, Scout: Robert Pearl Bryson, 36, of Marble, was arrested, charged with a sexual offense against a child and held in the Cherokee County Jail on a $900,000 bond.

  • The Cherokee County Planning Board met to talk about bicycle trails, junked cars and the watershed ordinance.
  • Dr. Dan Eichenbaum wrote a letter to the editor saying it would be “a sin” as well as an “ecological abomination” for a proposed rock quarry to be located at Marres Top Road on U.S. 64 West in Hot House. Update: Eichenbaum was later elected to the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners, for which he is serving his third term.

Sept. 10, 1998, Journal: Rats and rat burrows were discovered in several locations along Main Street in Andrews, with the Cherokee County Health Department and local business owners working to eradicate the rodents.

  • The movie Forces of Nature was filming in downtown Andrews, with stars Ben Affleck and Sandra Bullock in town to shoot a scene. The film crew planned to go rafting in the area when they wrapped up.

50 years ago – Sept. 13, 1973, Scout: Larry Alan Green, 18, of Hiwassee Dam, a former basketball star for the Eagles, was killed when his car wrecked on N.C. 294 near the Suit Post Office.

  • The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved a food stamps program for welfare recipients and other low-income families.
  • The old Southern Railroad Train Depot in Murphy burned to the ground. One of the oldest buildings in town, it had been empty for six months, but the Jaycees lost donated clothing that was being stored in the depot.

Sept. 12, 1973, Journal: The Andrews Planning & Zoning Board adopted a rezoning proposal for the east end of Main Street downtown.

  • The lack of air conditioning, and not the burden of issues, worked up a sweat on the foreheads of a dozen people gathered for a special Cherokee County Board of Education meeting at Andrews Elementary School.
