10 years ago – May 22, 2013, Scout: Zechary Heath Golden, 18, of Ranger, was charged with second-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in the death of Bill Ray Arp, 61, of Ranger.
- Community involvement helped lead to the arrest of a Knoxville, Tenn., man in a felony hit-and-run accident that injured Farris Reid, father-in-law of County Manager Randy Wiggins. Update: The man’s wife was charged as an accessory a week later.
- Mark Cambranis was valedictorian, while Michael Thompson was both the salutatory and vocational honor student, at Murphy High School.
May 16, 2013, Journal: For sending students home over the weekend with a backpack full of food, Andrews First Baptist Church was named Andrews Middle and Marble Elementary schools’ Business Partner of the Year.
- Calaboose Cellars opened in Andrews, becoming the first brewery in Cherokee County. Update: While the brewery has since closed, Calaboose Cellars set the stage for many others to come in after them.
25 years ago – May 20, 1998, Scout: The Murphy Lions Club Pool was shut down for the summer due to the need for major renovations. Update: That pool, which was next to the
Rock Gym in Konehete Veterans Park, was eventually replaced by Murphy Health & Fitness.
- Hikers along the Appalachian Trail were asked to be on high alert for fugitive bomber Eric Rudolph.
- A letter to the editor scolded the court system for allowing so many cases to be dismissed on technicalities, saying it proved many people care little about the good work of local law enforcement officers.
May 21, 1998, Journal: A new Andrews dog leash law and licensing ordinance was about to go into effect, although just inside town limits.
- Lamar Alton Rogers, 30, of Robbinsville, was seriously injured after his pickup traveling about 30 mph hit a tree along Stewart Road in Andrews. The N.C. Highway Patrol reported that alcohol played a factor in the accident.
50 years ago – May 17, 1973, Scout: The Murphy Town Council accepted the resignation of council member W.T. “Bud” Brown, who was moving to a new home in Suit.
- Two trucks were stolen from Dockery Monument Co., another truck was robbed from Tobe Ware in Factorytown and a fourth was taken from the lot of Transportation Inc. All of the vehicles were later found abandoned in and around Murphy.
- Hundreds of special “Johnny Horizon” litter bags were filled during Murphy’s annual Spring Cleaning Week. The Murphy Garden Club also awarded winners of a “Let’s Clean Up Murphy” essay contest with cash prizes.
May 17, 1973, Journal: The total per-pupil expenditure in Cherokee County Schools for the 1970-71 school year was $696.45, while the statewide average was slightly lower at $662.81.
- Ruth Pullium, counselor at Andrews High School, assumed high school counselor duties for all of Cherokee County. Her primary job was to help encourage and prepare students to continue their education.
