10 years ago – Jan. 25, 2012, Scout: A Pride survey from the Coalition for a Safe and Drug-free Cherokee County shows alcohol and drug use among students was finally declining after years of increasing.
- The Sharing Center food pantry in Murphy set a new record, serving an average of about 1,200 local families per month.
- A lawsuit against the Cherokee Scout filed by a sheriff’s deputy over a column written by Publisher David Brown was quickly dismissed by the N.C. Court of Appeals.
- Senior player Jordan Lovingood of Murphy scored her 1,000th career point for the Lady Bulldogs.
- Jan. 26, 2012, Journal: Angela Postell and Richard Cseh of Topton were facing charges after authorities received tips of drug buying at a residence.
- The 1958 state championship team, basketball standout Keith Jones and longtime coach Kenneth Solesbee were scheduled to be inducted into the Andrews High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
25 years ago – Jan. 22, 1997, Scout: Three Peachtree firefighters were injured when the ceiling collapsed during a chimney fire in Clay County.
- Cherokee County Forest Ranger Mike Mauney was found dead in his home at age 43, which officials attributed to natural causes.
- A Polk County, Tenn., fan took a swing at a referee during a game, prompting a Hiwassee Dam student to take a swing at the fan. The fan was arrested on an assault charge, while the student was banned from attending all Eagles games.
- Jan. 23, 1997, Journal: None of the handful of people who showed up spoke in favor of holding staggered elections for Andrews mayor and the board of aldermen. Update: Despite that uneventful hearing, years later staggered elections were approved and continue today.
- The Andrews Chamber of Commerce honored Tony Caivano with the Director’s Award, Frank Jones with the Joe El-Khouri Community Service Award and Gayle Lay as the 1996 Business Person of the Year.
50 years ago – Jan. 27, 1972, Scout: Max Allen Moss, 17, of Clay County, died from an apparent drug overdose while working in Smyra, Ga.
- Vandalism was a growing problem at Forest Service recreation areas in Cherokee and Clay counties. Update: The problem still hasn’t gone away.
- The Scout won two awards in the annual N.C. Press Association contest – a first-place honor for Best Typography, and a second place for Editor Wally Avett’s editorial writing on school consolidation. Update: School consolidation remains an important issue here five decades later.
Jan. 26, 1972, Journal: Andrews voted to enforce the downspout ordinance, which outlawed drainage pipes from buildings into the town’s system.
- Director Milton Carlson of Four Square Community Action announced major changes coming to emphasize how to better help low-income residents.
