10 years ago – Jan. 23, 2013, Scout: Rosanna Deal-Kendall, 30, of Morganton, Ga., was killed in a two-vehicle accident on N.C. 141 in Marble, with excessive speed cited as the cause.
- The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners considered getting its own gas pumps, which would save money since the county only received a .5 percent discount at local stations.
- Jessie Hopson Marler, 55, of Simpsonville, S.C., was killed in a single-car accident on Joe Brown Highway in Hanging Dog.
Jan. 24, 2013, Journal: Jessie Irvin Carter, 23, of Andrews, was arrested on sex offenses involving a child under age 13.
- Former Cherokee County manager William Todd Reece of Andrews passed away. He was often called the community’s ”oracle.”
25 years ago – Jan. 28, 1998, Scout: Lakita Karen Morrow, 8, and Robby Dean Morrow Jr., 11, both students at Martins Creek School, were killed in a one-car accident after the driver lost control of the vehicle on Brasstown Road.
- Notla Farms in Ranger was recognized as the Mountain Regional Conservation Farm Family of the Year, with Johnny and Wanda Shields picking up the honor in Raleigh.
- Bill Bateman of Andrews was named coordinator of Cherokee County’s 911 system, repacking Darrin Watkins.
Jan. 29, 1998, Journal: Scotty Baker of Andrews Texaco said a police car sat unprepared at his station because Police Chief Junior McGaha wouldn’t give his approval to fix it.
- Senior Julie Dailey was named Nantahala High School’s 1998 homecoming queen.
50 years ago – Jan. 25, 1973, Scout: Bear Paw Resort opened an ice skating rink and a sled run, complete with artificial snow.
- Texana was suffering from a water shortage, as the nonprofit community system was running dry for the 63 families who used it.
- You could buy a push lawnmower from Carolina Tire Co. in Murphy for only $25, the same price as an AM/FM clock radio.
Jan. 24, 1973, Journal: About 53,000 mountain acres in the Nantahala Gorge owned by Percy B. Ferebee of Andrews was going to be turned over to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
- Four teenage boys from East Cleveland were busted with 26 grams of marijuana.
