10 years ago – Nov. 28, 2012, Scout: Murphy defeated Albemarle 27-24
in the 1A West Regional
to advance to the state championship football game. It was the Bulldogs’ third straight trip to play for the title.
- A proposed state bill that would tax video gambling operations was greeted with caution by local officials, who feared getting involved with such a “volatile” business.
- The Cherokee Scout wrote an editorial strongly in favor of not allowing federal legislators to become lobbyists on Capitol Hill once their time in Washington was over.
Nov. 29, 2012, Journal: Andrews Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7620 welcomed its first female member – Tammy Adams, a veteran of Operation Desert Storm and employee at Industrial Opportunities Inc.
- A consumption advisory was issued for certain fish in Lake Nantahala due to elevated mercury levels, but officials didn’t know where the contamination was coming from.
25 years ago – Nov. 26, 1997, Scout: Seven Cherokee County residents were charged with illegally killing black bears in two separate incidents.
- The Bellview Community Center was damaged by smoke and fire when an electric wall heater caught aflame.
- Two Cherokee County teenagers were injured when their vehicle left the road and crashed into two trees off U.S. 64 East.
Nov. 27, 1997, Journal: An unidentified man described as “distraught” entered Andrews High School after ramming his truck into two vehicles in the parking lot. A student tackled the man and held him down until police arrived.
- Andrews Journal Staff Writer Gerry Silvia waxed eloquently in a column about how we should be more thankful for turkeys, especially during this time of year.
50 years ago – Nov. 30, 1972, Scout: Santa Claus was planning to land in Murphy by helicopter – much to the delight of local children and parents, who didn’t want to have to leave town to see Kris Kringle.
- Thieves broke into a house near Marble and carried away several antiques owned by Addie Lewis of Murphy that belonged to her mother. A reward was offered for the safe return of an old pump organ, a pedal-type sewing machine, cedar chest, bookcase and china closet.
- A Journalist’s Book of Prayer, which included prayers from news writers across the country, was released nationwide, which the Scout discussed in an editorial.
