10 years ago – Jan. 11, 2012, Scout: The filing period began as the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners was preparing to expand from three to five members.
- Douglas Beal, 51, of Murphy, was sentenced to one year in prison stemming from a June 11, 2009, vehicle accident that killed Arthur Krebs, 43, of Hayesville.
- Roger and Patricia Swanson filed a lawsuit to prevent a VIPER tower from being built above and behind the Cherokee County Detention Center in Murphy. Update: County officials later said they thought a deal could be reached to lift all restrictions on county-owned roads in that area.
Jan. 12, 2012, Journal: Two local residents were inured in three-car accident on U.S. 19/74 in Andrews.
- Two Andrews men – Jeremy Casey Lequire and Donald Hugh Jones – were taken to the Graham County Jail when methamphetamine was allegedly discovered in their vehicle. Update: The arresting officer, Graham County sheriff’s Detective Joseph Jones, was later elected Graham County sheriff. Today, he works with the Andrews Police Department.
25 years ago – Jan. 8, 1997, Scout: The murder trial of Barbara Geiger, 55 – who was accused of murdering her husband, James Raymond Geiger, 49 – got under way at the Cherokee County Courthouse.
- More than 100 people crammed the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners’ meeting room to protest a proposed ordinance dealing with junked vehicles on private property.
- Five Murphy wrestlers won gold medals at the Hendersonville Bearcat Invitational. Steven Flynn, Matt McRae, Jeremiah Brinke, Josh Wilkinson and Tom Wilkinson went unbeaten in the tournament.
Jan. 9, 1997, Journal: Two 12-year-old Robbinsville girls, one who was behind the wheel, survived an automobile crash near the Andrews Airport.
- The Andrews Police Department applied for a $100,000 federal grant to hire one full-time and one part-time officer.
50 years ago – Jan. 13, 1972, Scout: A grow of about 30 parents asked the Cherokee County Board of Education to allow them to enroll their children at Murphy High School instead of Hiwassee Dam High School because it offers more to students.
- Twin brothers Gary and Larry Beavers, 17, were arrested on separate larceny charges and ended up together at the Cherokee County Jail.
- The Murphy Town Council supported building an 18-mile, limited-access, four-lane highway linking Andrews and Murphy. Update: Local residents still call that highway the four-lane.
Jan. 12, 1972, Journal: William Keith Moore, son of Mrs. and Mrs. William T. Moore of Marble, was accepted onto the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
- Five Andrews High School students were scheduled at study at Oxford over the summer – Coy Brown, Robyn Burch, Martair El-Khouri, Janet Ferebee and Maurice West.
