10 years ago – May 30, 2012, Scout: A total of 117 crosses created a somber Memorial Day tribute to veterans from Cherokee County who gave all they had for their country.

  • Hiwassee Dam High School’s top graduates – valedictorian Emily Figueroa, salutatorian Drew Fowler and vocational honors student Fabi Jimenez – helped the Class of 2012 raise enough money to rent an air-conditioning unit to keep the gym cool during graduation.
  • Many teachers across the county were using the Cherokee Scout as part of their weekly classroom curriculums. Update: The Newspapers in Education program will return this fall.
  • Logan’s Run Rescue founder Ron Stoessell struck an agreement with another group member, Roy Bamfield, to drop charges against one another after a confrontation during a meeting.

May 31, 2012, Journal: Andrews native Clyde Edward Ellis delivered ammunition in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

  • Nantahala High School’s eight seniors all earned a diploma for a 100 percent graduation rate.

25 years ago – May 28, 1997, Scout: Murphy High School student Christopher Lee Lloyd, 18, died as a result of a single-car accident on U.S. 129.

  • Warrants were issued for the arrest of Warren Griffin “Todd” Pope Jr., owner of MobyCo Inc. in Murphy.
  • The Truett Baptist Association was raising $8,000 to buy a local disaster recovery van.

May 29, 1997, Journal: The Andrews Board of Aldermen approached an amended zoning law in town. Update: There are still no zoning laws in the county.

  • Andrews aldermen decided not to amend an ordinance that banned game rooms, pool halls and similar businesses in town.

50 years ago – June 1, 1972, Scout: Mrs. Ralph Moody of Murphy was among three people killed in Raleigh after a young man opened fire on a crowd with a .22 rifle.

  • The new Murphy First Baptist Church was dedicated, representing an investment of about $600,000.
  • Men’s and women’s canvas shoes could be had for the low price of $1 – same as a men’s roll-up hat – at Dollar General Store in Murphy.
