10 years ago – May 27, 2015, Scout: Kenneth Ryan Jones, 21, of Andrews – who was already facing drug and conspiracy charges – was arrested again after a four-day chase after running from Murphy police.
- Hiwassee Dam High School honored top senior students Cassie Weaver as valedictorian, Chandler Hales as salutatorian and Tar Raper as the vocational honors student.
- “All gave some, some gave all” was the theme of the annual Memorial Day ceremony in downtown Murphy. Jan Griggs gave the remarks, while 12-year-old Isaac Brown sang a patriotic and gospel song.
May 28, 2015, Journal: The N.C. Local Government Commission was coming to town to help Andrews get back on the right financial track.
- Jeff Moose, 55, walked the 618 miles between Murphy and Manteo for a reason. He was trying to raise $10,000 to help homeless children.
25 years ago – May 24, 2000, Scout: Fire destroyed a mobile home on Harshaw Road in Murphy, but no one was injured. The blaze apparently started on a couch.
- More than $54,000 was raised during the fifth annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life at Murphy High School. A total of 35 teams took part in the 18-hour event.
- CNI Senior Editor Phil Hudgins wrote a column asking the pertinent sports question, “Do we tolerate abuse as long as our team wins?”
May 25, 2000, Journal: Retired Col. Howard Lovingood said he would like to see a U.S. Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps program offered to Cherokee County students.
- The Granny Squirrel convenience center was now staffed by Cherokee County workers and accepting items for recycling as well as garbage for the Dumpsters.
50 years ago – May 29, 1975, Scout: The old steel bridge on Joe Brown Highway over the Valley River was called one of the 10 worst in the state by N.C. highway engineers. Only cars and light pickups were allowed to use it.
- The May Sale at Carolina Tire Co. included a brand-new 30-inch stove for just $188, a refrigerator for $248 and an upright freezer for another $248. For outside cooking, a new aluminum cooker grill would cost you only $26.88.
