10 years ago – July 29, 2015, Scout: The Cherokee Scout won Community Newspapers Inc.’s President’s Award for co-sponsoring a series of political debates for Cherokee County offices, along with WCVP and WKRK radio and Local TV Channel 4.
- A Murphy couple allegedly left marijuana and methamphetamine in their hotel room, resulting in their arrests days later. Sheriff’s K9 Ajax helped find the drugs during a search.
- The photo page “Faith, Friends & Fellowship” covered multiple events at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Ranger, which was kind enough to invite Cherokee Scout Staff Photographer Ryan Revock into their congregation.
July 30, 2015, Journal: Priscilla Chambers Guffey of Andrews said she wouldn’t change a thing in her 90 years on Earth. “I have had a good life,” the community icon said. Guffey had five children born across seven years.
- Carl and Grace Derreberry of Andrews celebrated 70 years of marriage, with the big day coming on July 30, 1945. Daughter Vickie Hicks said, “When we were growing up, I don’t ever remember hearing my parents argue.”
25 years ago – Aug. 2, 2000, Scout: A Wartburg, Tenn., teenager died after suffering seizures at the Andrews rest area. The incident occurred after the 15-year-old inhaled an unknown substance.
- A small fire at the Coats American plant in Marble caused no structural damages. Update: That plant today is owned by CoreWeave, which recently purchased it from Core Scientific, which was already in the process of switching the facility from Bitcoin to artificial intelligence applications.
- John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown celebrated its 75th anniversary of keeping old-time Appalachian traditions alive. Update: Math being what it is, the folk school is celebrating its 100 anniversary this year.
July 27, 2000, Journal: The convenience center Dumpster site at the Cherokee County Landfill in Marble had trash strewn around the facility in an ironic act of vandalism.
- Barnett Stubbs Ford-Mercury in Franklin announced they were selling used cars for as low as $55. Update: It couldn’t be confirmed whether any vehicles were actually sold for that price.
50 years ago – July 31, 1975, Scout: The 57th annual Cherokee County Fair drew good crowds in Murphy, with several winners announced under the circus-style tent just off of the midway.
- Volunteers were hard at work cleaning off a ball field site in Hot House. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners purchased the land for recreational events as well as a community center.
July 30, 1975, Journal: Vickie Lynn Galloway, 3, of Andrews was at Duke University Hospital in Durham undergoing massive treatments for lymphatic leukemia, an often fatal form of bone marrow cancer. Her family was also struggling with the high cost of medical bills.
