Murphy – A convicted sex offender was arrested last week for not informing about social media accounts.
Anthony Wayne Dendy, 44, registered as a sex offender with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office in March and completed an affidavit stating that he had no online identifiers. In June, when Dendy completed the verification process at the sheriff’s office, he again filed an affidavit indicating he had no online identifiers.
However, law enforcement officials later learned Dendy had at least one or two accounts on Facebook. In North Carolina, sex offenders are required to report any online identifiers, such as social media accounts and email addresses.
Dendy, who listed a Murphy address when he registered as sex offender in Cherokee County, had been convicted for assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct and criminal sexual conduct with a minor in Anderson County, S.C., in 1998.
As of the Cherokee Scout’s press time, Dendy was being held in the Cherokee County Detention Center on a $20,000 secure bond.
