Hiwassee Dam – The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office has announced the grand opening of the new Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Hiwassee Dam substation at 7845 N.C. 294.

“The sign is up, and the building of a new substation is complete,” Chief Deputy Justin Jacobs said in a release.

The new Hiwassee Dam substation officially opened Sept. 4. The substation is a way for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office to increase law enforcement presence within the county.

“This is something I have been trying to do since I took office in December 2022, and I am very happy to announce it is now open and ready to help serve our large county,” Sheriff Dustin Smith said.

While this substation is not manned 24 hours a day, it does give citizens in this area an opportunity to make appointments to pick up reports or talk with a deputy without having to driving into Murphy. The substation will also provide office space for deputies assigned to this area to conduct daily operational duties.

This space can also be utilized by our victim’s advocate to assist victims in need. There is a phone that calls directly to dispatch as well on the outside of the building.

“A big thank you goes to the hardworking employees of the sheriff’s office, for their time and effort in this project and ensuring the sheriff’s office was able to open this substation within my first term, which was very important to me,” Smith said.

“We look forward to serving this community with an office that provides us with an opportunity to meet people face to face

in an area located over 15 miles from the sheriff’s office. With a world increasingly using video and audio chat forums, such as Zoom, we are feeling the importance of personal interactions.”
