MURPHY

A new name at Konehete

Konehete Park was officially renamed Konehete Veterans Park earlier this month, after the town council voted to approve a name change proposal presented by Ben Adams.

Adams, who won his Republican primary race for the District 3 commissioner’s seat, had already gotten approval from the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners. Both governing bodies had to approve the move.

Adams said the same name change proposal was presented in 2018 by another individual, Oscar Valdes, but it failed to gain traction, due in part to the perception that a name change could be offensive to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Adams added that his proposal was actually supported by the tribe, as well as the American Legion and others.

Big or small, $ helps all

If you have been to Walmart lately, you’ve probably noticed popcorn and snow cones for sale inside at the front of the store. All proceeds from purchases of the tasty treats will go to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Adalynn Hall, a Walmart associate, mans the table up front, trying to help raise money for a good cause. The goodies will be for sale until the end of June. Anyone who doesn’t want to purchase the eats can still help by simply making a donation.

Plastic jugs are displayed on the table with the different store manager’s names and photos on each jug. At the end of the month, the manager with the least amount of donations inside their container will receive a pie in the face. The table for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals fundraiser will be set up every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Thursday.

Nonprofit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals support the health of 10 million children every year. For details, visit childrensmiraclenetworkhospitals.org or click on the hashtag #helpingkidslivebetter.

CORRECTION

Harold Helton, owner of H&H Sports in downtown Murphy, told the Cherokee Scout on Tuesday morning that he is open for business. A quote from an article on page 11A in the June 15 edition of the Cherokee Scout made it seem otherwise.
