MURPHY
Singer comes to local pub
Rising singer-songwriter Eli Lev is coming to The Parson’s Pub downtown for a special evening of entertainment at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Lev pens lyrics and melodies for everyday enlightenment – songs that resonate because they’re heartfelt, earthy and offer the wisdom he’s gained through lifelong travel and self-discovery. The Maryland-based artist has just completed his Four Directions project, which includes four EPs that were inspired by indigenous traditions he learned while teaching on the Navajo Nation in northern Arizona.
A cross between The Avett Brothers and The Lumineers, Lev has opened for both Shooter Jennings and Lee DeWyze, performed at The Kennedy Center and 9:30 Club in Washington, and toured extensively throughout most of the country. Cooper talks dinner meet
Gov. Roy Cooper was among the speakers during the Rebounding Stronger Summit held at the Cherokee Convention Center on Aug. 9. More than 120 regional leaders gathered to discuss the challenges and solutions facing rural western North Carolinians.
Hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Southwestern Commission Council of Governments, and Land of Sky Regional Council, the summit featured comments from Cooper, who highlighted his administration’s accomplishments, including that 83 percent of the economic initiatives created in the past few years have been in rural communities.
“When we invest in rural communities, we strengthen the entire state,” Cooper said. Panels of experts led discussions regarding infrastructure solutions, workforce solutions and strategies for innovation, which challenged and inspired representatives from Graham to Rutherford counties.
AUGUSTA, Ga.
Local man writes book
Dr. Gerald Chambers, a native of Cherokee County who still has family living here, is the author of a new hardback book, On This Hill Upon This Rock, a nonfiction sesquicentennial celebration of faith and service at the Church of the Good Shepherd, which was founded here in 1869.
Chambers retired from the University System of Georgia after 33 years in teaching and administration. His son, Jason Chambers, is dean of research and planning/Early College liaison for Tri-County Community College.
“This book pays tribute to the vision of a band of devout followers who worked tirelessly to bring a church to their community in often trying circumstances,” the jacket of On This Hill Upon This Rock says. For details, visit the church’s website at GoodShepherd-Augusta.org.
