Refinancing hearing set

The Murphy Town Council will hold a public hearing at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, at the Murphy Fire Department, 1 Firehouse Lane, to take public comment concerning a proposed financing contract, under which the town would borrow about $1,650,000 to refinance existing loan obligations.

According to a released from the town, the refinancing will reduce borrowing costs and save Murphy money. The proposed financing would be secured by a lien on the fire station and associated land.

The town’s plans are subject to change based on the comments received at the public hearing, and the council’s subsequent discussion and consideration. Murphy entering into the financing is subject to obtaining approval from the N.C. Local Government Commission.

RALEIGH

Bill will ban ‘race theory’

A bill that blocks North Carolina's K-12 schools from promoting critical race theory is on its way to Gov. Roy Cooper.

The state House gave House Bill 324 final approval Sept. 1 with a 61-41 vote. The bill prohibits schools from promoting more than a dozen concepts about racism and discrimination, most of which came from critical race theory.

The theory is centered around the idea that race is a social construct used to oppress people of color. Critical race theory gained new notoriety in response to the 1619 Project, a New York Times multimedia piece that connects slavery to capitalism.

Despite first being approved in the House 66-40 in May and passing the Senate 25-17 on Aug. 26, the measure led to a lengthy debate. Democrats said the bill would censor history. Republicans said it would stop schools from pushing inappropriate concepts.
