MURPHY
Drop in for caregivers
November is Family Caregiver Appreciation Month, and the Cherokee County Department of Social Services and Reach of Cherokee & Graham Counties want to recognize the good work caregivers do.
The agencies will host a drop-in event from 3:30-6 p.m. Friday at Penland Senior Center, 69 Alpine St. downtown. If you provide any care for adult family, stop by for food, resources and expressions of how much you are appreciated. Your loved one is welcome.

GRAHAM COUNTY
9 airmen to be honored
U.S. Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-N.C.) last week introduced legislation to authorize the Secretary of Agriculture to relocate a memorial honoring nine Air Force crew members who lost their lives during a 1982 training mission from private land to U.S. Forest Service land.
U.S. Rep. Don Davis (D-N.C.) is the co-lead of this bipartisan legislation. U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) is leading the Senate bill.
On Aug. 31, 1982, a C-141 departing Charleston Air Force Base crashed into Mount Johns Knob on the North Carolina and Tennessee border. All nine crew members were killed, and a granite marker honoring them sits on private property 6 miles from the crash site.
The families of the deceased have requested that the marker be relocated from the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests to the Stratton Ridge Rest Area at the second mile marker off Cherohala Skyway in Graham County. The new location would be closer to the crash site, and private supporters of the site have pledged to move the monument themselves.

RALEIGH
Unused meds are destroyed
A joint effort involving the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and N.C. National Guard resulted in the collection of 21,780 pounds of unused prescription medications as part of Operation Medicine Drop’s Fall Take Back Event and the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
That translates into about 16.3 million dosage units thanks to the citizens of North Carolina who continue to fill drop boxes across the state at pharmacies, hospitals, clinics, police departments and sheriff’s offices with unused or expired medications.
