Fire station open house
Clay County Fire & Rescue has a new Station 14 and wants to show it off at an open house Saturday.
The event will be held from 1-4 p.m. at the new Station 14, 10560 Old Highway 64 W., next door to Tri-County Racetrack just across the Cherokee County line. There will be door prizes, and light refreshments will be available.
Take a tour of the new firefighting facility as well as check out all the trucks. Everyone is invited.

Hoedown helps all
The second annual High Lonesome Hoedown will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Jimmy’s Pick N Grin, 220 Upper Valley River Lane, just off U.S. 19/74.
There will be food and drinks, a silent auction and performances by the Steve Jordan Band. Tickets are $75 and available from Kim Johnson at First Citizens Bank in Murphy or email highlonesomestables@gmail.com.
The event is a fundraiser for High Lonesome Therapeutic Equestrian Center 15712 Joe Brown Highway in Ogreeta, which provides equine assistance programs for children and adults.

Decorate windows
It’s time for the Andrews Chamber of Commerce’s annual Christmas Window Contest. This year’s theme is “Whoville (or The Grinch),” which is also the parade theme.
Local businesses are asked to decorate front windows for the season, then email director@andrewschamber.com to let folks know yours is ready. The deadline to decorate is Friday, Nov. 17, so the town will look festive for Christmas on Main come Saturday, Nov. 25.
Judging will take place Dec. 4-7, so be sure to have your display all lit up on those evenings. In addition, the Town of Andrews Christmas Parade is planned to start on Main Street just after dark Saturday, Dec. 9.

A Missionto Monitor
The Independent Monitor to Mission Health System will post a public meeting at 5:30 p.m. today at Angel Medical Center, 149 Siler Farm Road.
Gibbins Advisors is the Independent Monitor hired to monitor HCA Healthcare’s compliance with the obligations HCA agreed to when it purchased Mission Health System in early 2019. In each meeting, the IM team will discuss its role, provide an update on HCA’s 15 commitments, and provide an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and make comments.
All events are in-person and open to all members of the public. Attendance may be limited by space restrictions, so registration is encouraged.

Anniversary at Art Walk
The Murphy Art Center is putting on a show from 5-8 p.m. Friday for the Valley River Arts Guild’s monthly Art Walk.
Watch wood become art from a chainsaw in the hands of artist Chris Gagnon of The Bear Factory. Listen to Southern rock with a touch of blues from Cletus Way, and get to know some of your neighbors.
In addition, at the same time a first anniversary celebration is planned at The Mac, 12 Peachtree St. downtown. Celebrate the anniversary of the first year at the MAC’s new location as well as the unveiling of “The Vault,” a time capsule of local artwork. Toast local artists with a glass of champagne or wine.

‘Pond Water’ suspenseful
Local resident Brenda Biddix has released her first new novel in 13 years, Pond Water.
Written with co-author Rian Mileti, “the suspense will make it hard to put down,” she told the Cherokee Scout. A book signing for Pond Water is planned at Jan’s Needful Things,
