Gov. Cooper has reappointed Larry Kernea of Murphy as a member at-large to the Tri-County Community College Board of Trustees.
Kernea is chief executive officer and general manager of Murphy Electric Power Board and has more than 40 years of experience in the utility industry. He has been on the college board for two decades, serving as chair for much of that time.

New grant for internet
Across the state of North Carolina, 25,825 households and 862 businesses in 33 counties will get high-speed internet thanks to nearly $80 million in additional Growing Rural Economies with Access to Technology grants, Gov. Roy Cooper announced Thursday.
“We want all North Carolinians connected to high-speed internet so they can take full advantage of digital opportunities for work, learning, health and more,” Cooper said in a release. “These grants will fund projects in communities from all corners of our state so more families and business will have access to affordable, reliable broadband.”
The N.C. Department of Information Technology Broadband Infrastructure Office, part of the Division of Broadband & Digital Equity, awarded a GREAT grant to deploy broadband infrastructure in Cherokee County to CND Acquisition Corp., in Clay County to Blue Ridge Mountain Electric Membership Corp. and in Graham County to Zito West Holding LLC. Filing begins for aldermen
Filing has begin to run for two seats on the Andrews Board of Aldermen in the general election scheduled Tuesday, Nov. 7. These are the only Cherokee County or municipal offices with seats expiring in 2023.
Filing began Friday and continues through July 21. Aldermen Jonathan Ellison and Mike Sheidy have both announced they are running for re-election.

Intersection closing soon
U.S. 19 Business – better known as Hiwassee Street – will be closed to all through traffic through the entrance of Murphy First Baptist Church starting at 7 a.m. Monday, July 24.
The N.C. Department of Transportation said in a release that the closing is necessary to excavate, grade and pave the new alignment. The DOT anticipates reopening that section of road no later than 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1.
Barricades and signs will be placed as reminders. The DOT said the primary detour route for motorists will be to use Peachtree Street.

U.S. Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-N.C.) has announced that his office is accepting submissions for the 2023 Congressional Award for Young Americans in North Carolina’s 11th district.
Applicants will be recognized for achieving challenging goals in areas of public service, personal development, physical fitness and extracurricular activities. This is a nonpartisan, voluntary and non-competitive program, and successful participants can earn bronze, silver or gold awards.
“The Congressional Award is an opportunity for young folks across our district to attain the highest congressional honor for America’s youth by setting and achieving challenging goals,” Edwards said in a release. “I look forward to seeing the talent of Western North Carolinians on display through experiences that will shape our future leaders.”
