Ducks, eggs on the way
It may not be Easter, but it will certainly be an egg hunt.
The United Way of Cherokee and Clay Counties will host its annual spring Easter Egg Hunt and Rubber Ducky Race on Saturday, May 27, at Konehete Veterans Park. Foul weather forced the rubber duckies to take cover on April 8, but United Way board member Christie Standish feels confident they can come out to play on Memorial Day weekend.
“This is our major fundraiser,” Standish said. “We want the community, churches and local businesses to come out and enjoy the event.”
It promises to be a big event, with more than 10,000 eggs filled with goodies and prizes, and another 1,000 rubber ducks prepared to race down Valley River in hopes of winning a first-place cash prize. The event starts at 10 a.m., with the egg hunt opening at 11 a.m. The much-anticipated duck race begins at noon.
The United Way plans to expand the event this year with food trucks and more business sponsorships. Standish said they expect to see 1,000 people attend. The organization supports more than a dozen local agencies with a variety of focuses, including Reach of Cherokee County, Cherokee and Clay county food banks, the Dolly Partner Imagination Library and Cherokee County 4-H Club.
Businesses wishing to buy a sponsorship can email uwcherokee@yahoo.com or call Standish at 828-644-3290. All of the money raised stays in the community.
