Blankets & comforters

A local ministry hopes to blanket Murphy in warmth this winter.

Free gently worn blankets and comforters will be given away to the homeless and needy from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, in the fellowship hall at First Baptist Church of Murphy, 517 Hiwassee St.

Area water meeting set

The Marble Community Water System’s annual meeting is set for 8 p.m. Thursday at Cherokee County Emergency Medical Services Station 4, 2411 Airport Road.

Sign up for assistance

The Salvation Army will hold signups for local residents in need of assistance on Thanksgiving and Christmas from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Konehete Park, 699 Connahetta St.

HIWASSEE DAM

Access road lane closures

The Tennessee Valley Authority announced that beginning Monday, specialized construction crews will begin cutting slots in Hiwassee Dam to manage concrete growth and ensure the continued reliability of the spillway gates.

The work will require lane closures on Hiwassee Dam Access Road. Look for roadway signs.

This maintenance work will continue through the end of December. Due to the area being an active construction zone, TVA is strongly encouraging pedestrians to avoid the area.

Ballerina party soon

Murphy School of Dance is presenting a Ballerina Princess Party from 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday at 281 Tennessee St.

A real Disney princess will be a special guest, with girls ages 3-7 singing and dancing along with her. There will also be a 30-minute ballet lesson.

Decorate windows

It’s time for the Andrews Chamber of Commerce’s annual Christmas Window Decorating Contest.

Business owners are encouraged to decorate their front windows by the deadline of Friday, Nov. 18, so downtown Andrews will be ready for Christmas on Main Street and the town’s annual Christmas parade. $5K Raffle Fundraiser

HAVEN Children’s Advocacy Center is planning its annual $5,000 Raffle Fundraiser from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Hackney Warehouse, 11 Railroad St.

Christmas parade set

The Town of Andrews will be hosting the “Small Town, Bright Lights” Christmas Parade at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, on Main Street downtown.

Trophies will be given to first-, second- and third-place finishers. No Santa Claus imposters will be allowed in the parade. Judging will begin in West End Plaza at 4:30 p.m.

Help out Saturday

Murphy is planning a “Make A Difference Day” on the Murphy River Walk, extending to the Payne Street boat ramp area and Sunset Cemetery, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Mayor Tim Radford has asked Project MARS/AmeriCorps volunteers to join local residents to make a noticeable difference along the River Walk and other town properties. For details, email mayortimradford@gmail.com.

The volunteers will be doing a little bit of a lot of things, from trimming low branches and vegetation to cleaning benches and picking up litter. Graffiti will be removed, gravel will be put down and signs repainted.

Everyone is welcome, and lunch will be served.

Bike tickets helping kids

The Pediatric Cancer Treatment Foundation has kicked off its annual kids bicycle giveaway. This year, the nonprofit
partnered with Strider and will give away a 12” balance bike.

Tickets are $5 each or five for $20. Get your tickets at Farley Insurance, 1004 U.S. 64 W.

Register to vote soon

Eligible individuals who want to cast their ballot on Election Day 2022 must register to vote by Friday, as the early voting period begins Thursday.

Individuals who miss that deadline may register and vote at the same time during the one-stop early voting period, which runs through Nov. 5, at any early voting site in their county. To register, eligible individuals have the following options:

  • If you have a North Carolina driver’s license or other DMV identification, you may register to vote online at www.ncdot.gov/dmv/offices-services/online/Pages/voter-registration-application.aspx.
  • Any eligible resident can complete a Voter Registration Application and return it to the county board of elections office by 5 p.m. Friday.

North Carolina residents may not register to vote on Election Day unless they become eligible after Friday’s registration deadline due to becoming a U.S. citizen or having their rights restored following a felony
conviction.

Seventeen-year-olds who will be 18 years old by the general election Tuesday, Nov. 8, are eligible to register and vote.
