Staff with the office of U.S. Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-N.C.) will be in Cherokee County today.
The Carolina Cruiser will be in front of Andrews Town Hall, 188 Main St., from 3:45-4:45 p.m. today. It will be in front of the Robbinsville Post Office, 74 Sweetwater Road, from 9:30-11 a.m. Thursday.
These stops give residents a chance to speak with Edwards’ staff about issues they may be facing or to get help with federal services.
CHEROKEE
$50M set for tribe housing
U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner announced Friday more than $52 million in Indian Housing Block Grant funding for eligible Native American Tribes and Tribally Designated Housing Entities in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina to carry out affordable housing activities in Indian Country.
Nationally, HUD awarded $1.1 billion in IHBG funding. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians will receive $4,433,113 of that.
“From day one, HUD has been engaged on alleviating affordable housing challenges facing urban, rural and tribal communities. Today’s announcement reaffirms our commitment to serve tribal communities while working toward meeting Indian Country’s housing needs,” Turner said in a release.
The program is a formula grant that provides affordable housing activities in tribal communities. Eligible activities include housing development, operation and modernization of existing housing, housing services to eligible families and individuals, crime prevention and safety, and model activities.

MURPHY
Movie night for the kids
The Town of Murphy invites families to a special outdoor movie night at 9:15 p.m. Thursday, July 3, at Konehete Veterans Park. This free community event features a screening of the beloved movie The Sandlot.
The Sandlot is a 1993 coming-of-age sports comedy that follows young Scotty Smalls as he moves to a new town and befriends a group of neighborhood kids through their shared love of baseball. Set during the summer of 1962, the film captures the adventures, challenges and camaraderie of childhood, making it a nostalgic favorite for all ages.
Kids will enjoy complimentary kettle corn and snow cones, making it a summer evening under the stars. Families are encouraged to bring blankets and pillows to relax on the lawn.

THIS WEEK
- Cherokee County Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting for budget hearings at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Cherokee County Courthouse, 75 Peachtree St. in Murphy.
- Local, state and federal government offices – and the Cherokee Scout – will be closed Monday for Memorial Day. The Scout will reopen at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
