Guild gets $5K grant
The Valley River Arts Guild, which operates the Murphy Art Center downtown, has received a $5,000 unrestricted grant from the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, according to a release.
The foundation recently approved $45,000 in Cultural Resources focus area grants for general operations to nine arts councils across the region. The foundation awards discretionary funding in Education, Cultural Resources, Human Services and Natural Resources.
Cultural Resources grants are made through competitive and proactive awards. Competitive general operating grants are distributed according to a rotating schedule and through an expedited application. Application in the next grant cycle are due by July 12.

Farmers marketing
Downtown is getting a newly formed Farmers Market, which is scheduled to be open from 8 a.m. until noon every Saturday at Hall Memorial Park on First Street.
Begun by Carol McElroy of Fairfarren Farm and Pam Smith of Feisty Ranch Farm and Cups & Cones, the duo is offering spaces for $45 for the first season, which is scheduled to run through October. The market hopes to offer plant starts and seedlings, fresh eggs and baked goods from certified kitchens, along with soaps, tinctures and other locally grown and made products.
There are 16 slots open around the park, with First Street remaining open for customers. The spaces are first-come, first-serve for setups. Vendors must supply all of their own equipment, including tents and tables.

Graduating from college
The end of the 2024 spring semester at Tri-County Community College is approaching, and with it come the annual commencement ceremonies for students, family and friends, faculty and staff.
- The Region A Nursing Consortium Pinning for both Tri-County and Haywood Community Colleges will be held at 5 p.m. today in the Enloe Multi-Purpose Room on the main campus.
- Graduation will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the Enloe Room.
- Students receiving their high school equivalency diploma will be recognized at the high school equivalency graduation at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Enloe Room.

Town hall meeting set
Are you happy about the way things are going in Cherokee County? A local group wants to work together for change, peacefully and patriotically.
Citizens for a Better America will be hosting a town hall meeting with Commissioner Ben Adams on Thursday, May 16, in the private meeting room at Legends Steak House, 42 Tennessee St. downtown. Come and eat starting at 5 p.m., and the meeting will be held from 6-7:30 p.m.
This meeting is free and open to the public.

Early voting with runoff
Early voting for the 2024 second primary ends Saturday for Tuesday’s election.
Second primaries are being held statewide for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor and state auditor. Winners of the second primaries will be the Republican nominees on the Tuesday, Nov. 5, general election ballot.
All registered Republicans in North Carolina may vote in the statewide second primaries for lieutenant governor and state auditor. Also eligible for those contests are unaffiliated voters who either didn’t vote or voted the Republican ballot in the March 5 primary.
