Peachtree – Wendy Alexander, a Cherokee County Schools of Innovation teacher, has received one of the highest honors in theatre education.
Alexander, known for her passion and dedication to her students in Cherokee County, has been nominated for the Excellence in Theatre Education Award, presented annually by The Tony Awards and Carnegie Mellon University.
Alexander, who has inspired countless students through her theatre and arts programs, shared her excitement and gratitude in a heartfelt message.
“I am completely astounded and just humbled beyond belief to share some incredible news that I received last night,” Alexander said. “Just typing those words feels absolutely surreal and I have shed more than a few tears.”
The Excellence in Theatre Education Award honors educators who have demonstrated monumental impact on the lives of students and their communities through theatre education. To be nominated for such a prestigious award, Alexander said, is a dream she never imagined could come true.
“To know that someone thought enough of me and the work I do with my students to submit my name for this prestigious honor is beyond anything I could have ever dreamed of or imagined,” she said.
“This award celebrates the transformative power of theatre education, and I can truly say that it is my students who inspire me every single day.”
Alexander, who has dedicated years to building not only performances but also safe spaces for students to express themselves, emphasized that her nomination is as much about her students as it is about her work.
Though she does not know who submitted her name for consideration, Alexander expressed her deep gratitude.
“To whomever submitted my name, I do not have enough words to express my gratitude. You have reminded me that what we do as educators truly matters, and for that, I am forever grateful,” she said.
Whether or not she ultimately receives the award, Alexander says the nomination itself is a victory, a testament to the power of arts education and the incredible students she has taught throughout the years.
The Cherokee County community celebrates with Alexander in this recognition honoring her for her unwavering dedication to empowering students via theatre, a release says.
