Museum fire damage limited

Town police officers noticed smoke coming from the basement of the Murphy Police Department at 93 Peachtree St. downtown about 9:46 p.m. June 1. The Cherokee County Historical Museum is in the same building. In less than two minutes after the call was dispatched, Cherokee County Emergency Medical Services was on the scene, and in less than five minutes the Murphy Fire Department was on hand with an engine. The source of the fire, an overheated box fan, was discovered and controlled about 10:03 p.m. Town Manager Chad Simons said Murphy officials are extremely grateful for the quick response of county EMS; the town’s fire and rescue team, and police department; plus assistance provided by the Peachtree and Ranger volunteer fire departments. Because of their actions, the building did not suffer any significant damage. Repair efforts are underway due to water damage to the basement. Cherokee County Historical Council President Glenda Fisher hugs Murphy Fire Chief Al Lovingood in thanks after the flames were out.
