Murphy – The town has announced a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina under the WNC Community Enhancement Grant program.
This grant will fund the creation of a significant heritage mural in downtown on the side of the building at 13 Tennessee St., adjacent to the pocket park containing the Veterans Monument.

The mural project, led by Main Street Murphy, a department of the town, is set to be a vibrant celebration of the town’s rich history and culture. It aims to portray significant residents who have played pivotal roles in shaping the community, thereby fostering a deeper sense of pride, identity and community engagement among residents and visitors alike.
“We are thrilled to receive this grant, which will allow us to bring the heritage mural to life. This mural is not just an art project; it’s a reflection of our town’s spirit, resilience and unity. It will be a testament to the people who have made Murphy what it is today,” Downtown Director Laura Lachance said in a release.
“We believe that this initiative will not only beautify our downtown area, but also serve as a catalyst for increased economic activity by attracting more visitors to our local businesses.”
The mural is expected to become a focal point in downtown Murphy, increasing foot traffic and positively impacting the local economy, including shops, restaurants and other businesses in the area.
In addition to the grant, the project will receive further support and resources through a collaboration with the Cherokee County Arts Council.
“We are also thrilled to be working alongside the Cherokee County Arts Council, which has secured $5,000 from the Cherokee County TDA to supplement our project. Their involvement will be crucial in both the planning and implementation phases, ensuring our mural not only celebrates our past but also brightens our future,” Lachance said.
The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina’s support for this project highlights the importance of local history and culture in building strong, cohesive communities. Town officials say they look forward to the commencement of this project and lasting positive impact it will have on the town and local residents.
