Murphy – Friends of the Murphy Public Library held a fundraising yard sale Sept. 15-16, and the community came out to show support as well as get some great deals.
“We’re raising money to get a new sign out in front so we can tell everyone what’s new at the library real easy,” said Julie Chautin, president of Friends of the Library.
There were about 20 people standing in line before the door even opened to begin browsing on Sept. 15. Once opened, folks scattered quickly in different directions in search of the treasures they were hoping to find.
Macy Skirvin, who is 12 years old, came looking for some material for a pillowcase, but left carrying other items as well. Most people were leaving with more than just one or two things.
Some of the many things for sale included tools, frames, dishes, crafting supplies, sewing material, toys and collectibles. Others items were furniture, small appliances, artwork, DVDs and VHS movies.
Charles Owen of Bellview had already donated items to the library for the yard sale. He came back to buy some things the next day.
“Libraries are wonderful places,” Owen said. “They deserve my support.”
“It’s the camaraderie of people here, I can just feel the energy of nice people especially in Murphy.” said Ginger Rosenberger of Marble, who plans on donating items for the library’s next sale.
Up next in library fundraising is a silent auction planned for Thursday and Friday, Oct. 26-27. One of the auction items includes four VIP passes to attend a taping of the television show Wheel of Fortune in California.
Other auction items include a $100 gift certificate for Murphy’s Chop House restaurant as well as a $40 fruit basket from Ingles. However, the library is seeking more donations to go toward the new signage.
