Murphy – The first Murphy Farmers Market of the season was a success, despite many folks initially believing it would be hindered due to weather.
Folks came out to browse, eat and walk along the numerous vendor booths that were lined up. About 30 tents decorated the lot at the L&N Depot on Saturday morning.
Items for sale included spring hats, woodworks, pet attire and jewelry. Dennis Harper was out with his colorful birdhouses, bee traps and garden boxes, as well as Eileen Frisch with her handcrafted wine holders and wooden serving trays.
Becky Buscema of Becky’s Bevy said, “I’m very surprised about the good weather and the turnout.” She sells beautiful wreaths as well as other decor.
New vendors included Evan James Murphy with Sew Murphy Studio, who was displaying his work of hand-sewn folk art figurines, framed folk art and pillows.
“It’s a beautiful day, and I love being here,” Murphy said of being at the market for the first time. “I love meeting everyone in Murphy and look forward to teaching sewing to everyone.”
He has a studio above Carolina Crafting and welcomes everyone to stop by.
Other new vendors Lynn Witter and Tom Isaac from Magick Moon Farm came out with items such as goat’s milk soap and fresh eggs from the goats and chickens they raise on their farm. They also had candles and ornaments, and plan on bringing fruits and vegetables in the near future.
“This is a perfect day for the venue, and it seems like it’ll be good so far,” Witter said.
No one went hungry, as a wide variety of cookies, cakes and other treats were available. Vendors were also selling honey, jams and jellies, pie and lamb. If you were looking for handmade rugs, potholders, bath products or essential oils, the market had them.
The Murphy Farmers Market will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday through October at the depot, 4 Railroad St. off Hiwassee Street near downtown. The market accepts EBT dollars.
