Hiwassee Dam – A Walker Road man is being held without bail, charged with an open count of
murder in the death of another Walker Road resident, Melissa Marcum, 61.

Mark Drake, 57, is being held without bail at the Cherokee County Detention Center in Murphy.
On July 19, a 911 call reported a vehicle in the roadway along Walker Road off N.C. 294 and north of U.S. 64/74. Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies searched the area and soon found the body of Marcum, owner of the vehicle.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and agents with the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the death. Drake was charged with felony murder on July 24. No further details have been released.
