Murphy – A man claims he was hit with an axe and had his vehicle stolen, but he does not want to prosecute because he’s “not a snitch.”
Cherokee County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Joe Wood said a woman called 911 about 3:30 a.m. Thursday and said the man showed up on the porch of her home off of Tilson Road. The individual allegedly was bloodied and talking to himself.
He later told deputies he had been attacked by two men. However, he refused to provide any further details about the incident.
“He said he’d been beaten with an axe handle and his car was stolen,” Wood said. “This guy said he did not want to press charges on the people because he was ‘not a snitch.’
“He said he had never seen them before, he didn’t know their names, he did not know what (race) they were, he did not know where they took his van or even where they stole it from or beat him up at.”
Wood said the man received medical attention for a cut underneath his eye. His van was later found at a home not far from Hot Spot convenience store in Ranger. The vehicle’s engine was still warm.
“Tilson Road is probably at least a six- or seven-minute drive from Hot Spot down (U.S.) 64,” Wood said. “I suspect he was probably at a house down there and somebody took his van from that area.”
According to Wood, deputies said the man did not appear to be in “the right state of mind.”
“We could arrest somebody for it, but he’s not providing any information,” Wood said. “If he doesn’t prosecute, there’s nothing we can do.”
