A lot's going on at the Murphy Public Library

Murphy – The Murphy Public Library received a nice crowd of folks on Aug. 8, all looking for a great deal. The annual Trash to Treasure sale had people standing in line before the doors even opened in anticipation of what they may find.

“I came out today for this garage sale, they’re very hard to find around here. I came from an area in Georgia that had them everywhere. I was here for their craft sale too. I did find a few things I wanted. I don’t need a lot, I just came out for the fun of it,” said Cathy Olney of Ranger.

Mark Poncin of Hayesville stopped by the sale and appeared to have a bag full of goodies.

“I’m just the donkey that carries her stuff, and there’s more up at the front desk,” he said with a laugh. Poncin found a few treasures, including a couple of needle points and new puzzles.

Occasionally shoppers would hear the sounds of a loud cow bell ringing, in celebration of those who made a donation to the library or left the change due after their sale. Every penny helps the library with needed funds that in turn allow new library purchases that are ultimately enjoyed by the patrons.

The Murphy Public Library is planning a fundraising silent auction Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14-15. They are seeking donations from local businesses that will help make the event a success.

Friends of the Library’s meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, is open to everyone. They will be reviewing the year’s progress, discussing the treasury report and addressing the library’s needs as well as planning major events for the upcoming year. Community input is welcomed.

The library is also inviting volunteers ages 17 and older to help with organizing shelves and performing light cleaning duties. If interested, please visit the library and ask for a volunteer application.
