Local resident dies from COVID, but positive test results down

The Cherokee County Health Department reported the 95th local death attributed to COVID-19, as a person in their mid-60 90s died from the virus Monday, according to a release.

       From Oct. 19-25, there were only 16 positive test results for COVID-19 reported by the Cherokee County Health Department, just three who had contact with previously reported cases. All of those testing positive developed symptoms, but none have been hospitalized and they have all been isolated.

       Since the pandemic started through Monday, the health department has conducted 21,104 tests, 16,341 which were negative, Of the 4,642 positive tests, 4,532 have been released, 95 are deceased and 15 are active.

       According to the N.C. Department of Health & Human Services, 59 percent of state residents ages 18 and older have been at least partially vaccinated, while 55 percent have been fully vaccinated. There have been 11,517,753 total vaccine doses administered statewide so far.

       The health department continues to offer vaccines at no charge for ages 12 and up at the office in Murphy. For details, call 837-7486.
