Sheriff gets ‘new’ truck
Cherokee County commissioners puzzled over whether a Ford F350 pickup donated to the sheriff’s office was too good to be true.
Sheriff Dustin Smith has been trying to replace a pickup that caught fire and was destroyed. The pickup is used by the county jail for work crews.
Sandy Springs, Ga., offered to give a Ford F350 to the sheriff, but commissioners, who had to approve the donation at their Aug. 5 meeting, worried over the age of the truck – 13 years – and its high mileage – more than 110,000. The truck also needs a catalytic converter.
Commissioner Cal Stiles said the truck may need a lot of work, and he feared a request for a new truck in the near future. Commissioner Ben Adams said the donation is a good deal for a heavy duty truck, despite the issues, and was worthwhile even for its scrap value.
Smith said the donation was the result of relationships he has established with other agencies. The board approved the donation on a 4-1 vote, with Stiles casting the lone no vote.
