3 in Murphy get arrested

A traffic stop resulted in four arrests on drug charges April 29.

Clay County sheriff’s Lt. Tyler Faggard, a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration task force officer and Investigator Nick Queen were surveying an area of Cherry Road in Hayesville after receiving information that a suspicious person was present around the roadway near a known residence used for the sale of drugs. Officers spotted a white Chrysler sedan driving by, according to a release.

The driver was Mark Thomas May, 35, of Murphy, whose driver’s license was suspended. Queen stopped the vehicle on Cherry Road near the shopping complex at N.C. 69.

Passengers in the car were Kristi Lace Eickleberry, 24, of Murphy; Danny Ray Johnson, 42, of Murphy; and Susana Cardoso Daconceicao, 44, of Florida. The officer reported a strong odor of marijuana coming from within the car, and the occupants were removed, the release says.

As Queen was dealing with May, Faggard secured the other three occupants and began checking their statuses with Clay County Dispatch. After first providing a false name, due to having outstanding warrants for his arrest, Johnson was finally identified.

Eickleberry was identified as having been recently released from prison and on federal probation for bringing in and “harboring illegal aliens.” A probable cause search was conducted, and a cigarette pack containing a clear baggy with a substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine was found near the gear shifter nearest to where Eickleberry was seated, the release says.

A small blue baggy containing a substance that field tested positive for fentanyl was found within May’s wallet. All cell phones within the car were seized and will be subject to future searches. A Clay County Detention Center van was called to the scene to take all four individuals to the jail.

At the detention center a glass smoking device, a small aluminum stick and two torch lighters in a black pouch were seized from Daconceicao’s vaginal area. The glass smoking device contained an amount of suspected methamphetamine, the release says.

Each of the four individuals were charged with felony possession of methamphetamine. May and Johnson were also charged with felony possession of fentanyl. Daconceicao was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. No bonds were issued, and the suspects remain in custody.
